I've been following the World Baseball Classic on television these days. I've even gotten up at 5 am a couple of times to watch the Japanese team play. I'm not the only one watching the Japanese team on TV. It seems Fidel Castro is following the WBC, and he had some things to say in his 'Reflections by Comrade Fidel' column which is syndicated in Cuban newspapers. 'Reflections by Comrade Fidel' reads like a blog and besides baseball, ole' Fidel has tons of ideas to share about all kinds of stuff (like America's 11th President). I've translated the English translation of his entry on the WBC into Japanese. Yes, I realize how ridiculous that is, but I figured translating a piece written in non-Native English would be an interesting challenge. PLUS it's the first piece that I've done written in the first person. I've also included the Spanish original for all my Spanish reading audience (all 0 of you), so you can tell me how close the Spanish translation is to the English.

その回、先頭打者が三振したあと、前3打席ヒットなしだった危険で象徴的なイチローがヒットを打った。

日本のコーチは、疑いもなく一流の、第二打者にバントを命じた。結果として日本は相手に二つ目のアウトを与えた。

私はこの行為は、我がチームにとって、どう考えても間違いだと確信を持っている。

日本のチームは優秀で技能が優れたチームだ。私は我がチームのWBC優勝はこのチームを破って飾りたい。

ただし、もし私が日曜日3月8日の昼に見たキューバ対南アフリカ戦での我がチームの不注意が続けばそこまでたどりつけないだろう。

オリベラとパレは共に一塁で牽制され、ミチェル・エンリケスは無理に二塁へ進もうとして相手にアウトを与えてしまった。彼の過ちはコーチの走塁戦略が積極過ぎたせいかもしれない。

I am trying to follow the events of the Baseball Classic, thanks to our national television services.

The game between the teams from Japan and South Korea, Cuba’s strongest opponents, took place on Monday March 9. The score was 1-0 in favor of the latter and Japan only had two more opportunities to bat.

The dangerous and emblematic Ichiro, who had already failed on three occasions, hit a single.

The Japanese coach ordered a bunt from the second – and without doubt first-rate – batter of the team, and as a result, presented the opponents with their second out.

I am sure that, for our experienced team, that would seemed an error whichever elemental way it is analyzed.

The Japanese team is excellent; I would like our victory in the Classic to be achieved at the expense of this team; a team that has tremendous technical expertise.

That will not happen if we slide into the carelessness that I observed during the match between Cuba and South Africa on the afternoon of Sunday, March 8.

Both Olivera and Paret were left stunned at first base and Michel Enríquez gave away an out with an irrational advance towards second base after batting a hit, possible too agitated during his run from the base by the order of the coach.

As could be appreciated, that game would have been won on the mercy rule in seven innings, with six homeruns – two from Cepeda – and a record in the Classics. That would have elevated the well-deserved prestige of Cuban sport.

I allow myself to make this criticism because it concerns three exceptional athletes, with tremendous shame, but also confidence in themselves.

They know that they are representing wholesome sport in this international competition. I must express my opinions with honesty and admiration.

Reflexiones del compañero Fidel: La crítica justa y constructiva

Trato de seguir las incidencias del Clásico deportivo, gracias a los servicios de nuestra televisión nacional.

El juego entre los equipos de Japón y Corea del Sur, los dos más fuertes rivales de Cuba, que tuvo lugar hoy lunes por la mañana, estaba 1 a 0 a favor de éste, cuando a Japón le quedaban solo dos oportunidades al bate.

El peligroso y emblemático Ichiro, que había fallado tres veces, conecta un sencillo.

La dirección japonesa ordena un toque de bola al segundo bateador - sin duda bueno - del equipo, entregando así el out dos.

Estoy seguro de que a nuestra experimentada afición le pareció aquello un error, a partir de cualquier análisis elemental.

El equipo japonés es excelente, me gustaría que nuestra victoria en el Clásico se alcanzara a costa de ese conjunto de gran maestría técnica.

Ello no se logrará si caemos en descuidos como los que ayer domingo 8, observé por la tarde entre Cuba y Sudáfrica.

Olivera y Paret se dejaron sorprender los dos, en primera base, y Michel Enríquez regaló un out con el avance irracional a segunda, después de batear hit, agitado tal vez demasiado en el corrido de base por la dirección del equipo.

Como se pudo apreciar, ese juego se habría ganado por knockout en siete innings, con 6 jonrones, dos de Cepeda, un récord en los Clásicos. Eso habría elevado el merecido prestigio del deporte cubano.

Me permito hacer la crítica porque se trata de tres atletas extraordinarios, con enorme vergüenza y confianza en sí mismos.

Ellos saben que representan el deporte sano en esa lid mundial. Debo expresarlo con honestidad y admiración.
